First Green Hospital of India Launched in Ahmedabad
Recently, Care Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), a hospital venture brought forth by a group of doctors in Ahmedabad, has come up with India’s first ‘green hospital’.
An online news portal about business and economy – economictimes.indiatimes.com, quotes a statement of Dr Milan Chag, managing director, CIMS, “We not only save money in the long run but also make our contribution to save the planet.”
Further the news portal gives an analysis, “For hospitals, power costs constitute 40% of the operating cost. By going green, CIMS expects to cut 20% of its power costs as nearly 75% of the area receives sunlight.”
Keyur Parikh, chairman, CIMS said on the occasion to ET, “We expect to break even in three months as a lot of efforts have gone to save costs.” The 150-bed green hospital which is expected to save money on power, water etc. due to its architecture and technology would enable it to offer services at 10% lower charges from patients compared with those charged by other hospitals.
The capacity can be scaled up to 450 beds and the group plans to invest another Rs 150 crore for a 22 storey hospital building likely to come up in two years.
In place of the usual clay bricks, fly-ash bricks were used for the building, thus re-cycling the fly-ash that is either dumped by power generation companies or goes as land-filing thus contaminating the land and ground water. The fly-ash walls would be 10 times thicker than the usual brick walls and reduce heat absorption.
Also, the use of recycled materials avoids erosion of top soil. There is also extensive use of biodegradable material for flooring. The hospital also uses remote sensing air-conditioning system and solar heaters for hot water supply.”
In the last, the news portal writes, “The hospital would soon apply to US-based LEED, an internationally recognised green building certification and accrediting company. CIMS, which was earlier known as Care Cardiovascular Consultant (CCC) was set up 10 years ago by a group of doctors in Ahmedabad.” It is the best news like India’s First Swine Flu Vaccine.
